On behalf of Tom Lundborg:
Time, temporality, and the limits of International Relations
Call for papers: ISA Annual Convention, New Orleans, 18-21 February 2015
While much work has been done on the role of space and spatial borders in trying to articulate as well as question the boundaries and limits of International Relations (IR), the role of time and temporal borders has received far less attention. In response, this panel seeks to shift focus from the role of space to that of time; from spatial borders to temporal borders. Specifically, we are interested in papers that explore how conceptions of time and temporality condition the ways in which IR-theories construct their particular understandings of the world and, by extension, how such conceptions can be said to play a crucial role in defining the boundaries and limits of IR as a separate ‘discipline’. Moreover, we are looking for papers that discuss how critical approaches to history and historiography can be used in order to analyze as well as question/challenge the temporal borders of IR. Questions to be addressed thus include:
* How do different conceptions of time and temporality underpin theories of IR? What are the connections between conceptions of time and, for example, the realist emphasis on recurrence and stagnation; liberalist/cosmopolitan notions of progress; ideas about development in theories of modernisation; themes of crisis, emergency, trauma, catastrophe and the exception in critical approaches; and the ‘colonisation of time’ in postcolonial approaches?
* How is it possible to use ‘time’ rather than ‘space’ as a primary conceptual tool for engaging critically with the borders, boundaries and limits of IR as a ‘discipline’? Where can the temporal borders of IR be located? In which ways can these borders be seen as significant? How is it possible to analyse their ‘political’ dimension?
* What is the relationship between the role of time in IR and critical approaches to history and historiography? How can critical approaches to history and historiography be used to question and challenge the temporal borders of IR?
