Conference: Vulnerability and the Politics of Care

Dear all,

I would like to invite you to a British Academy Conference on the topic

Vulnerability and the Politics of Care: Cross-disciplinary Dialogues’

which will be held at the premises of the British Academy in London from 9-10 February 2017.

Conference abstract: The words ‘vulnerability’ and ‘care’ are increasingly used to describe everything from economies to ecosystems, health to human rights.  Vulnerability is a fundamental aspect of the human condition, giving rise to the need for care. Yet, we are not all vulnerable in the same way, nor are our vulnerabilities equally recognised. Moreover, whilst care can be a practice that sustains life, caring relations are not always benign.  This conference will consider the variable meanings and manifestations of ‘vulnerability’ and ‘care’ and their complex relationship, from a range of academic disciplines, as well as the political and ethical implications of these.

The conference will bring together speakers from a range of disciplines, including IR, philosophy, anthropology and sociology.

Speakers include (among others):
Professor Judith Butler, University of California, Berkeley
Professor Erinn Cunniff Gilson, University of North Florida
Professor Jackie Leach Scully, Newcastle University
Professor Angela McRobbie, Goldsmiths, University of London

Registration for the conference is now open. For further details and registration please visit: http://www.britac.ac.uk/events/vulnerability-and-politics-care-cross-disciplinary-dialogues

Please join us for what will definitely be an exciting, unique conference!

Best wishes,
